Carrie Vaughn – Kitty and the Dead Man’s Hand

Book 5 in the Kitty Norville series

When I first started reading this series I really wanted Kitty to get together with Cormac and was really disappointed (ok maybe more like heartbroken) when he ended up in prison and she ended up with Ben, and to be truthful I just never felt comfortable with Kitty and Ben as a couple but in this book I finally fell in love with them as a pair.

For those of you who are new to the Kitty books, Kitty is a late night radio presenter, who’s show deals with the stranger side of life (Ghosts, Vampires etc).  She also happens to be a werewolf.  As the series goes on she has a hit placed on her, but manages to talk the hit man (Cormac) out of killing her.  She is outed publicly as a werewolf, and has all sorts of adventures along the way with Cormac and his lawyer cousin Ben and other assorted characters.

In this book Kitty and Ben are planning their dream wedding, which soon turns out to be a Vegas wedding with the minimum of fuss.  Or so they hoped, but things rarely go smoothly in Kitty’s world so why should a quiet, quickie wedding in Vegas be any different?

Instead she ends up hosting her radio show on live TV, agreeing to meet the master vampire of Vegas at the request of the master vampire of Denver.  Get booked into a hotel with a gun convention, which just happens to have a large contingent of werewolf hunters who know Ben and Cormac, and some of whom really, really want to kill Kitty. She also runs up against the worshipers of an ancient goddess who really, really want to kill Kitty, oh and did I forget to mention she losses her soon to be husband just hours before the wedding? who had postponed said wedding so that he could enter a poker tournament? No? well she did.

This was a much better read than the last book, (which I had found a little disappointing) and as I said earlier it finally got me on board with the whole Kitty and Ben deal.  It was a fast paced story, with twists and turns and humor at every point, it isn’t the best book out there but it is a very good book in a pretty good series and well worth a read.

But (and there’s always a but) I just don’t get the title!! there is no reference that I can remember to a dead mans hand.  So if I’m missing something, will someone please tell me because it really is annoying me!
